From sneaking into a facility undetected, to planting tracking bugs on a stolen helicopter and providing covering fire for Natalya as she reprograms the GoldenEye satellite, each level offers something unique. On the other hand, GoldenEye 007 featured an incredible amount of level variety, each of which were characterised by a set of goals players needed to complete as Bond. ![]() However, the fundamentals behind each level was the same: one simply needed to utilise their arsenals and slay anything that moved. ![]() DOOM had added additional depth by requiring keycards be found to access new areas, and compelled players to explore for secrets. Until GoldenEye 007, first person shooters had been simple in terms of mechanics players would explore an area, defeat all foes and find an exit to move on. Both the film and video game would represent a massive leap forward for the James Bond franchise: the film was the first post Cold War James Bond to be produced and introduced Judi Dench as the first female M, while the video game revolutionised first person shooters. In the process, Bond discovers his old partner, Alec Travelyan, founded Janus with the intent of avenging his parents and destroying the United Kingdom. The game is loosely based on the film GoldenEye, which sees MI6 Double-O agent James Bond investigate the origin of an EMP blast that destroys a Russian radar site and investigate a plot by the criminal organisation, Janus, to use the remaining satellite weapon. There are also various control methods that can be changed through the pause menu. When Rare’s GoldenEye 007 launched on August 25, 1997, it represented a dramatic leap forward for the then fledgling first person shooter genre. I still find this rather difficult it’ll be a while yet until I can hit the D-pad correctly without looking. It seemed that the pause screen could only be navigated using the D-pad and not the control stick. Shooting is with the R shoulder button and switching weapons uses the D-pad. The controls feel quite well suited, with the control stick used for moving and strafing, and the C-stick for turning. All the outdoor levels I played were set at night (unsurprisingly) and in the snow. There are a variety of ways to get around the level, with choices such as jumping on the truck or walking. Floodlights could be shot out to avoid detection guards sniped from far away (with a sniper rifle, obviously). A larger level had a variety of mission objectives and environments. In one, the only weapons were darts and you had to leave the indoor area undetected avoiding guards and alarms. I also played a couple of stealth levels. Subtitles were not on the screen while I played. The cut scenes are shown in third person and feature Pierce Brosnan as James Bond and are all fully voice acted. ![]() There is also an underwater level, and from your car you can shoot missiles at submarines. Voice acting is in place, with your partner who is driving telling you which direction enemies are coming from. The vehicle takes you down a snowy hill, through a forest. In the snow mobile level you are shooting down enemies from all directions. The version I played was quite an early build, but there was already quite a variety of levels with many vehicles, as well as stages on foot.
